Manage indices File Manager – cPanel

Learn How to Manage indices from File Manager – cPanel. When a visitor accesses a directory (rather than a page) on your website, the browser typically displays the directory’s index page. If no index page exists, the browser displays a list of the files in that directory. Use the Indexes interface to define how the server displays a specific directory’s index to a visitor or to disable index display for a directory.

Step-by-step tutorial – Manage indexes from File Manager – cPanel

  1. File Manager

    Login to cPanel.
    Tutorial: login from the Client Area or the direct link.

    Find Files section and click the File Manager link.
    Right-click on the directory you want to manage and select the Manage Indices option.

  2. Indexes

    There are four options for any directory. Select one of the following:
    Inherit
    It uses the parent directory’s setting. If the parent directory has no settings defined, the system will use its default settings. 
    No Indexing
    If an index file is not present, a directory listing is not displayed.
    Show Filename Only
    If the default file is missing, a simple list of the files present will display.
    Show Filename and Description
    It shows a list of files and their attributes: file size and file type.

    Click the Save button.

  3. Wait for the success message and Go Back.

  4. Under the Index Type column check the changes.
