Learn How to Compress Files using File Manager – cPanel. Compress the selected files or folders to a single *.zip, *.Gz, or *.Bz2 archives and store the compressed file in a specified folder.

Step-by-step tutorial – Compress Files using File Manager – cPanel

  1. File Manager

    Login to cPanel.
    Tutorial: login from the Client Area or the direct link.


    Find the Files section and click the File Manager link.
    Navigate to the folder where
    are the files you want to compress:
    – While holding down your Ctrl key, click on each file to include in the compressed file. 
    – If you want to compress all the files, check the Select All option (shown in the image below).
    – To compress the folder, select it in the Current Folder section

  2. Compress

    Click the Compress button in the Task Bar or Right-click and select the Compress option in the drop-down menu.

  3. Compress Window

    Compression type
    Select the compression type that best suits your needs.

    Zip Archive
    It Offers maximum compatibility, standard compression, and is typically used by Windows or macOS users.
    Tar Archive
    The backup file will not be compressed, and the data is placed into an archive.
    GZiped Tar Archive
    Files are compressed using the gzip algorithm (which has nice compression ratios,) and this type of compression is typically used by Linux users.
    Bzip2ed Tar Archive
    Files are compressed using the bzip2 algorithm. This type of compression offers better compression than GZiped Tar (.tar.gz) but the algorithm is slower.


    Type the Name of the compressed archive.

    Click the Compress Files.

  4. Compression Results

    Compression Results lists the compressed files similar to the image below.

  5. Download Compression (optional)

    You can download the compressed file
    Click on the Download button in the Task Bar
    or
    Right-click the file and select Download from the drop-down menu.
