Set Up Email Routing – cPanel

Learn how to set up Email Routing in cPanel. The hosting provider helps you use email with your domain name. Email Routing in cPanel allows you to choose how incoming email messages are processed/routed by the server.

  2. Email Routing

Email routing is handled through DNS, specifically the ‘MX’ record.
This record helps point mail where it needs to go when set within DNS. Routing to either your server or a 3rd party service such as Google Workspaces.
The configuration which you make in the Email Routing option will decide where to route all the incoming emails, but do remember to make sure you have configured the correct MX records through the Zone Editor of cPanel. Otherwise, mail may end up in a broken state.

If you want to change MX records, click the Zone Editor link.
Tutorial: Set MX records to remote server.

    Domain
Select the domain you wish to change the Email Routing.
If you only have one domain, it will be selected automatically.

  3. Configure Email Routing

    Automatically Detect Configuration:
    – automatically detects which type of routing to use based on which Mail Exchange (MX) records are in place.
    Important:
This setting only detects the local zone file entries and does not perform an actual DNS lookup. This setting is set upon configuration and does not automatically update. If changes are required, an administrator will need to manually adjust the MX Records in the DNS Zone Manager.
If the configured Mail Exchange (MX) records do not resolve, automatic detection will not occur.

    Local Mail Exchanger
    – the server will accept mail for this domain and will deliver it to the local mailbox.

    Backup Mail Exchanger:
    – the server acts as a backup Mail Exchanger and will hold mail until a Mail Exchanger (MX) with a lower priority number becomes available.
Note: You must configure the primary MX record to point to the appropriate exchanger. To edit MX records, use cPanel’s Zone Editor interface (cPanel >> Home >> Domains >> Zone Editor).

    Remote Mail Exchanger:
    – the email host for the domain name is set up elsewhere. cPanel will attempt to determine who the email hosting provider for the domain name is, and deliver it to the correct place.
Note: You must configure the primary MX record to point to the appropriate exchanger. To edit MX records, use cPanel’s Zone Editor interface (cPanel >> Home >> Domains >> Zone Editor).

Choose the desired routing option from the list and click the Change button.
Only advanced users who fully understand the effects of changing Email Routing should do so.
