Learn How to Enable Leech Protection for a directory in cPanel. The Leech Protection interface allows you to detect unusual levels of activity in password-restricted directories. After you set the maximum number of logins within a two-hour period, the system redirects or suspends users who exceed it. This is useful if, for example, someone posts a user’s login credentials on a public site.

Step-by-step tutorial – Enable Leech Protection for a directory in cPanel

  1. Leech protection

    Login to cPanel.
    Tutorial: login from the Client Area or the direct link.

    Find the Security section and click the Leech Protection link.

  2. Leech protection

    Click the name of the directory that you want to protect.
    Click the Edit button.

  3. Setup Leech Protection

    Type the maximum number of logins that you wish to allow each user within a two-hour period.

    To redirect users who exceed the maximum number of logins within a two-hour period, enter a URL to which you wish to redirect them.
    Send Email Alert to
    Select this box to configure the system to send an email alert when Leech Protection activates.
    Then, type the email address to alert.

  4. Setup Leech Protection

    Disable Compromised Accounts
    Select this box to disable an account that exceeds the maximum number of logins.
    Click the Enable button.

  5. Wait for the success message.
